Still Life

All the still life images of the Arrangement series were mostly taken within the “home studio” which consisted of natural light from a window and a black foam core background. The same black foam core was also used out in the field when photographing individual flowers. The image above used an ink-jet print crafted for the purpose to be a pastel presence behind the subject. The tree trunks were a combination of several images with black foam core placed along the edge of the trunks at various locations to be combined so the entire background was covered.

Most of the “studio” still life work below was a simple process of placing a subject on a granite kitchen countertop with a piece of black foam core behind, and white foam core on the right side to reflect the light from an opposite window. A few subjects, such as the Expired Christmas Cactus above, were laid flat on a piece of black foam core using the same window light and reflector. All very simple and straight forward. Only the red onion was a bit more complicated, being lit from below as it lay on a piece of glass covered by a black sheet of paper having a hole cut out slightly smaller than the onion itself.
