Journals

For the most part, all during my years of photography, I have not lived anywhere near any iconic landscape locations and have had to travel to experience them. During these vacations, going back to the early 1990’s when trips began to take on more seriousness with actual planning and specific photographic goals, I have always recorded the daily events in a diary or journal to be able to relive them in the future.

The journals began in 1991 and were then handwritten on paper. In 2014, just after the purchase of my first (and so far, only) digital camera, I began “writing” them using an iPad which made it much easier and faster, allowing the words to appear directly onto a web site originally set up for that purpose. Many of the photos included in those first blog posts documenting those trips were taken with an iPhone and miserable because the phone case trapped dust in front of the camera lens. Some of those poor photos in the original journals were replaced here with the actual DSLR photos taken at the time. The earlier trips, prior to 2012, utilized a medium format film camera, and some of the images taken during those trips were later scanned, and are included within the journals whenever possible. However, only a small number of those film photographs were ever scanned to be able to get them onto a computer, and then this web site. So at times, digital photos from subsequent trips may have been added to supplement the narrative.

Additionally, most of the writing was done at the end of each day when totally exhausted and sleep deprived, needing quite a bit of editing having found many spelling errors and some scattered thoughts. But it was great to relive these trips by going through the journals used to memorialize them in more than just photos, since so many of the important memories of each day are easily lost through the passage of time.
